Every year in Nauvoo, the firemen set fire to a designated plot of dry land to demonstrate how quickly a fire can spread.
The citizens of Nauvoo that were around us were really excited and even had a hot dog roast going on.
The babies were happy.
And we were ready to see what this demonstration was all about.
At 6 p.m., the firemen promptly lit the back of the field.
And the fire started to grow.
I quickly felt less certain as the fire became bigger and closer.
And then we got an unwelcome surprise. This video shows how the fire progressed within just three minutes with the surprise at the end.
This video shows when all chaos broke loose.
And Caroline's reaction to the fire.
Don't worry, we grabbed the baby.
The fire looked enthralling around the temple. It was interesting to think about how the pioneers faced so many hardships including trouble with natural elements like fire.
I am grateful for the firemen who put out this fire, and I hope that they caught the kids setting off the firecrackers. One of the firecrackers even hit a missionary in the shoulder!
The same field looked like this the next day.
Although the Nauvoo Prairie Grass demonstration was pretty unforgettable and got my adrenaline pumping, I'm pretty sure that I'll observe from a distance next time.
